Intrusive Memories –

  • Unwanted and distressing recurrent flashbacks as if living through it again.
  • Nightmares of exact event or similarly upsetting dreams.
  • Emotional and physical reactions that remind the event repeatedly.

Avoidance –

  • Avoiding any topic of conversation or thought process related to the event.
  • Avoiding places, people or activities that trigger memories of the event.

Negative Changes in Thinking Process –

  • Thinking low or negatively about oneself and other people.
  • Feeling extremely hopeless about the future.
  • Problems in remembering things in general life.
  • Losing attachments from closed ones.
  • Lack of interest in activities that once were enjoyable.
  • Difficulty in experiencing the positive aspects of emotions.
  • Emotionally numb.

Physical-Emotional Reaction Changes –

  • Always alert and on guard for probable dangers.
  • Easily startled or frightened.
  • Self-destructive behaviours like substance abuse or risking life intentionally.
  • Trouble with focusing or sleeping.
  • Aggressive anger outbursts with overwhelming shame or guilt.

The intensity of the symptoms can vary greatly with time. The symptoms may suddenly show up when the victim is stressed or gets reminders of what they had to go through. Having constant disturbing thoughts of the event for months and experiencing severe reactions against it is a big sign to acknowledge the illness.
