RBC Full FormThe Full Form of RBC in medical terms is Red Blood Cells. Also known as Erythrocytes are the most plentiful type of cell found in the blood. Red blood cells are helpful in determining the blood type, by the presence or absence of certain identifiers, antigens, on its surface. These antigens help the immune system of the body to recognize its own blood type.

A RBC is usually said to have a biconcave shape, measuring 7-8 mm by length and 1-2 micrometers thickness. These cells lack nucleus and other cellular organelles. However they contain the respiratory pigment ‘Hemoglobin’which gives it the red color. The normal amount of hemoglobin in males is 14-16 grams per hundred ml of blood and in females it is 12-14 grams per hundred ml of blood.

It is normal for healthy male adults to have 5.4 million of RBC per micro-liter of blood, while for female adults it is 4.8 million per micro-liter of blood. The lifespan of a RBC is 120 days. The dead RBCs are destroyed in the spleen; 2.5 million RBCs are destroyed every second and are simultaneously produced in bone marrow. The numbers are same at any given time to maintain the haemostatic condition of the body.
