BMD Full Form, What does BMD stand for?

The Full Form of BMD

BMD Full Form The full form of BMD in medical terms is Bone Mineral Density. It is a test which detects whether one has osteoporosis. When one develops this condition, the bones become weak and thin. They begin more likely to break. The condition is silent, which means there are no symptoms associated with it. The person might not realize having this condition until they are tested or broke a bone.

It assesses the thickness of the bones with help of X-rays. The X-rays estimate the amount of calcium and minerals present in part of one’s bone. More the minerals found in the test, the better. That means the person has stronger, denser bones which are less likely to break in a fall.

The doctor may recommend the test if the person meets the following criteria:

  • A woman of 65 or older.
  • A woman who’s menopause has already begun before 65, and has other risk factors that could initiate osteoporosis.
  • A man of 50 or older linked together other factors.
  • Losing 1.5 inches of their adult height.
  • Posture has become hunched.
  • Experiencing back pain without a definitive cause.
  • Periods are irregular or suddenly stopped even though the woman was not pregnant or menopausal.
  • Had an organ transplant recently.
  • Hormone levels dropping drastically.

Certain types of prescription drugs can induce bone loss. They include glucocorticoids (drugs to reduce inflammation), dexamethasone (Ozurdex, Maxidex,Baycadron), cortisone (Cortone Acetate), or prednisone (Deltasone). It is recommended to discuss with the doctor about these during check-ups.
